If you have family members with disabilities, you may feel at a loss in your daily life to provide them with support. If you have a demanding schedule, you might find that you’re unable to be present with help as much as you’d like. Feeling inadequate in the care of your loved ones just piles on the stress you’re already dealing with in life.
You don’t have to be alone in providing support for your special needs family members. There are Miami Valley resources available with personalized home care services for people with all levels of disability.
From highly independent individuals to residents of assisted living facilities, Miami Valley Homecare provides dedicated support to people living in Centerville, Xenia, Beavercreek, Fairborn, Dayton, and Oakwood.
Ways you can support your special needs family member.
Every family is unique, and every family member with disabilities may have different needs and preferences regarding home care. Whether you’re brand new to supporting a special needs family member or augmenting a lifetime of care, there are good practices to use:
Ask, don’t assume: communicate with your family member with a disability, don’t presume to know the care they want or need.
Be flexible: people with disabilities may have evolving needs and wants, be adaptable and supportive of those changes.
Maintain the relationship: Schedule regular time to call or visit your family member with a disability. Even short FaceTime calls are great.
There are things that your special needs family member may need that you’re unable to provide. Home care services can help improve the quality of life for your loved ones with disabilities by doing things like:
Meal preparation: eating nutrient-dense food every day can improve mood, energy levels, and improve certain conditions.
Light housekeeping: a tidy home has an enormous impact on helping people feel their best.
Time spent outdoors: getting fresh air and sunlight every day can improve mood and energy levels.
Running errands: it’s frustrating not being able to take care of daily tasks such as going to the post office or getting groceries.
